How you can entertain your family

Decorate for Christmas

It’s your home/your apartment and you want to make it a special sanctuary this Christmas. How can you create a special place for your family and you? Well, we already have our centerpiecesee November’s issue Decorate for Thanksgiving.) Just replace candles and flowers. But how can you make your place shine with love and holiday spirit?

Your dining room table can have a nice Christmas cloth or runner. Replace the fall curtain scarf with Christmas co-ordinates to match your table cloth or runner. Look around your yard for any berries that you might use in your centerpieces. Be careful that little ones don’t put these in their mouths. Make a wreath for your door using a grapevine base and ivy you might have growing around the yard.place berries strategically around the circle. Make a bow of fine vines and place in the center, a couple of pine cones. What a unique heart warmer for your guests to enter your sanctuary by.

At the doorway, hallway, foyer, greet your guests with cinnamon sticks and and cloves stuck in oranges and apples placed in a wooden bowl on a hallway table. Cover the table with a plaid green and red cloth. Your kitchen can have all the smells of holiday cooking. Place a nice lantern in the window to remind us of those guests who couldn’t make it. Have a plate of finger foods for your guests. Simple things will do like a nice wooden bowl of cashews or give your guests something to do: serve pistachios.

Need something for the kids to do? Take tag paper and cut out a Christmas tree shape that is about 24 inches tall. Put it on a bulletin board, then make two different sized ornament patterns for the kids to use and have them trace ornaments on more tag paper. Let the kids cut the ornaments out. Take crayons and markers and decorate a couple to model how to decorate them for the kids. Provide some glue sticks and let the kids glue their ornaments on their very own tree.

In your living room or family room, create a warm feel with plaid coverlets thrown across your couches and chairs. If you have a mantel, string some berries into a garland.or use cranberries. Place wooden candlestick holders and white candles. Place ivy around the base.a very simple but elegant presentation.

After dinner have pie with coffee and tea. Pass out some carols and sing together. If you have a musical instrument, this would be a great time to accompany your guests. You can print some carols ahead of time. Make them into little booklets using old Christmas cards for covers. CHRISTMAS-CAROLS.NET - Rejoice in the Christmas Spirit!

Children’s Parties - Slumber Party Fun!

Slumber party themes tend to work best for girls, although boys can have sleepovers too. Somewhere around the age of ten would be a good starting out point for parties of this nature. To start your slumber party planning, first consider who to invite and form a list. These invitations should be mailed giving guests a couple of weeks notice. Invitations can be postcards, sleeping bag cutouts or anything you choose from a party supply store.

A simple yet fun theme would be a night of food and fun. Request that each girl bring some of her favorite things to the party. Examples could be a favorite snack, movie, magazine or game. They might not have time for everything, but leaving all of their options open is better than hearing, “We’re bored.” This allows them to move from activity to activity with minimal help from you while they eat. Each girl should also bring a sleeping bag and pillow if and when it comes time to go to bed.

Another great activity is makeovers. Buy them cheap makeup from a dollar store or if they are old enough they may have their own. Set up a Salon and let the girls experimenting. See who can be made into the scariest or goofiest. If it’s a slightly older bunch, the makeovers could be more serious and result in some great new looks. Facials or hand and foot scrub kits are other pampering ideas that could also make your party a hit.

Plan a nice breakfast for the morning before all your guests depart. Pancakes are a good choice; simple yet delicious and easy to make for a crowd. Breakfast is the perfect way to cap off a nice night with friends and end the experience on a great note.

Themes Can Add Zip to your Entertaining

After entertaining at home for over thirty years, you get a little jaded by hosting and attending the standard dinner party. Oh course, if it’s the right mix of people, you have nothing to worry about. But sometimes if you’re mixing a group that you have never brought together before, a theme can set a tone, that takes the pressure off the guests and rests it on the shoulders of the Arabians, the French Masquerade, or the Toga clad. And who doesn’t like to get dressed up and act out a bit? here are some ideas to get your creative juices moving.

-A white party. A great summer theme, everyone has to come in white clothing, ala the original by Truman Capote.

-Celebrities. This is a home run whatever the season, everyone always has a favorite they want to be, for at least a night!

Arabian Nights. Fun and sexy, people love the fez’s, belly dancers, and colorful brocade vests and turbans.

-Masquerade Ball. Dressed to the nines and face masks on top, a perfect blend of who is that woman in the stunning dress?

-Gender-bender. Invite everyone to come as the opposite sex. Great in the fall or anytime you want all your guests to laugh with delight.

Tahiti Night. A perfect way to perk up a dreary winter, think sun. Break out those tropical shirts and dresses, top with leis. Serve drinks with paper umbrellas.

Safari. Add some zest to an early spring get together with a jungle theme. Woman can dig for there animal prints and men can come as proper British hunters or Tarzan!

-Cherry Blossom. Celebrate the Orient. Invite guests to wear kimonos, chopsticks in their hair, sumi wrestlers, Kung Fu, anything Asian. Serve dinner on grass mats instead of the dining table.

-Toga. Excess is the key here. Opulent bowls of fruit, flowing beverages and plenty of skin make it an old stand-by.

-1950’s. Great for business affairs. Who doesn’t want to be the Fonz or Shirley or Gidget?

-Disco. They won’t admit it, but people love disco balls, the music of the Village People and dirty dancing.
